#1.What size is that Diamond? Ask this question of the majority of jewelry sales people and I guarnatee you, ninety five percent will respond by answering in weight. "Well this is a beautiful 3/4Carat round brilliant Diamond set in Platinum with blah, blah, blah……blah, blah…..blah”! Let me ask you this then Mr. Jeweler, how tall are you? “Hey thanks for noticing the results from the new diet, I now weigh 180lbs!! ” Nice try at some humor bud, but therein lies the problem. You see, it makes no more sense if I give you my weight when asked for my height, than you being given weight when you asked the jeweler for Diamond size! The correct answer is, "this is a beautiful 5.60mm round brilliant, but it weighs 0.75Carat-blah,blah,blah....blah..
#4. Who needs exact weight anyway? YOU DO!! Diamonds are bought by weight with scales sensitive enough a sneeze next door would effect it. IF they need to know, You need to know-here’s why. Diamonds are traded on a price-per carat basis. Example: $5,600.00 per carat x 0.96Carat equals $5,376.00. If it’s sold just as a 1Carat guess who pockets the -224.00dif. Humm…..
#2. So why is knowing size important? Two major reasons:What are you comparing when you compare your Diamond to another persons? Exactly, the size and not the Carat Weight. People see size and relate this to weight. How embarrassing to proudly hold out your hand and say, “I have a Carat Diamond“, yet it looks like a 3/4Carat-ouch! Secondly then, a well cut 1Carat Diamond will measure about 6.45mm diameter. If a jeweler tells you it's 5.95mm diameter, you know it's cut like a truck and the Jedi mind trick isn't working today-goodbye.
#5. Why is cut so important? Of the four C’s cut is the only one with the human touch. Don’t confuse cut with shape Oval, Pear, Square, etc., rather the overall skill in polishing the product. Look at it this way:you import pure Italian marble and the finest Chilean mahogany. The floor plan is in excess of 7,000 square feet and overlooks the city skyline, but the builder mishangs the doors, the windows allow way too much air to enter and the living quarter steps are uneven. Can you say bad-house. Same with a Diamond. Great Color and Clarity only go as far as the skill in Diamond polishing.
#3. How does the girdle fit Aunt Mable? Not that kind of girdle silly, but the outer edge that roughly divides the top portion (crown) from the bottom (pavilion) is called the girdle. If the girdle is too thick for instance, the Diamond has useless weight and resembles a skyscraper. If the girdle is too thin (1Carat measuring 6.65mm in some cases) the gemstone will look flat and dangerously in peril to chipping-yikes. Yes, hardness and toughness are not the same quality and you eventually will chip that Diamond.
